Conquering Your Child’s Fear of Flying

If your family is planning to travel by plane this year, you already may be fretting about your little ones’ fright of flight. It’s not uncommon for children to be scared to fly, especially if it’s their first time. Here are a few key tips to help keep them calm:

Talk about it
If your child is worried about flying, the best thing you can do is acknowledge their concerns and let them know you understand.

Be prepared and arrive early
Family travel is hectic enough – the last thing you want to do is be in a rush, which will increase their anxiety! With its convenient parking and manageable terminal, Mitchell International Airport (MKE) is a great place for families to launch holiday travel. Pack early and make sure the family arrives at the airport with extra time to relax before your flight.

Provide healthy foods
Avoid giving your child sugary foods or caffeinated drinks several hours before flying. They could heighten your child’s sense of pre-flight “jitters” and make them restless on the flight.

Pack some fun
Give your child something to look forward to on the flight. Pack their favorite movies and a portable DVD player to keep young travelers occupied.
